Sketchbook Cover for Art Workshop

Here's some custom hand lettering I did for an art workshop that I taught at Mohonk Mountain House. The word "Mohonk" is drawn with a rustic alphabet of twig lettering, popular in the late 19th century.

Wonderful illustration, Jim. So much personality!
For anyone interested in the Rustic Style of the mid- to late-19th Century, begin your studies with Andrew Jackson Downing (1815-1852) & Calvert Vaux (1824-1895). In spite of his untimely death at age 36, Downing is considered to be a founder of American landscape architecture:

Vaux was a close friend and protégé of Downing who took over his architectural practice. He is best known as the co-designer, along with his protégé and junior partner Frederick Law Olmsted, of what would become New York's Central Park:

The words "Souvenir Sketches" & "Mountain House" are done in an alphabet (sign painters never called them fonts) called Tuscan Extreme, and that is a "relief shade" on Mountain House. This info is per the work books for the sign program at Wagner School of Art, after WWII. It was later Butera School of Art, and is now closed I understand.

Nice job on the execution James. I used to do them with a french squirrel hair quill.

Absolutely beautiful. Just alone that initial "S" in Souvenir is to die for....
